Chilonga

  • Chilonga is an area about 60 kms south of Monkey Bay. The area is named after chief Chilonga, who has authority over 10 villages.

  • The scope of the area is about 25 by 15 kms. There are about 10.000 people living in the area in 1800 households.

  • The people originate from different tribes, mainly Yao and Lomwe. About 60% of the people is Muslim and 35% Christian.

 Why Chilonga?

  • Liebenzell Mission Malawi (LMMw) prefers to work in unreached areas.

  • On this moment there are no other organisations working in the area.

  • LMMw has been invited to the area by a delegation of chiefs from the area. Ubwenzi has been offered a free piece of land to use for the project and the people of Chilonga are willing to activily participate in the project.

 Area in need...

  • We would like to reach the Muslims in the area with the gospel. About 60% of the people is Muslim. Many Christians in the area are illiterate and are therefore not able to read the Bible by themselves. There is really a lack of sufficient, trained pastors for the churches in the area.

  • There are many problems in the area, such as: lack of access to clean water, bad harvests, lack of good facilities for education and health, many orphans and a high percentage of people infected with AIDS.
